Music in Exile is a not-for-profit record label and artist services organisation aimed at increasing access to resources and building professional networks for artists from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds working in the music industry. We operate on an ‘artist first’ principle, ensuring that individual artists have ownership over the tools and resources necessary to build viable careers for themselves in our industry, thereby contributing to ongoing change and working to build an arts sector that truly reflects the myriad viewpoints and experiences to be found in Australian society.

Sitting and talking with Mindy Meng Wang is something like standing on the top of a windswept, isolated hill and letting the air stream through your pores, clearing your mind of worries and shaking the dust from your joints. She is incredibly positive and bright, full of enthusiasm and always ready to welcome with a smile. Her excitement about her work bubbles outward, and her schedule is full year round with bookings, tours, recording sessions and collaborations. She travels constantly, never held back by the thought of taking her 21-string, two metre long guzheng along for the ride.
Mindy’s influences range from Chinese classical, contemporary Western, and the experimental and avant-garde. She excels in improvisation and is incredibly adept at performing with others, experimenting with new ways to utilise her instrument well beyond the realm of the traditional. Her long-term vision is to create a deeper and reciprocal musical connection between Australia and China.
Mindy has studied the guzheng since the age of seven, and her first solo performance was at only ten years old. She has since performed with a range of artists at festivals around the world, and currently lives in Melbourne, Australia.
