Chikchika perform East African pop music that transgresses cultural borders. Drawing upon the rich traditions of both Tigrinya and Oromo music, with a healthy influence from contemporary Australia, the band create a unique sound that has formed through patterns of migration and movement, their music a direct result of change, upheaval, new surroundings and a fusion of ideas. They have spent the past year performing at festivals including WOMADelaide and Dark Mofo, and are known for their high-energy, completely disarming live performances. 

Their debut single, Abichu, is a contemporary take on a traditional Oromo song of praise and love. It tells the story of Abichu, a young hero fighting to protect his people and his country. The track was recorded and mixed at home by the band, with additional tracking from Stefan Blair (Good Morning, Way Dynamic). It was mastered by Mikey Young and features original artwork by Rochelle Oh & Joelle Thomas. 

Chikchika bring a small slice of East Africa to their new home in Australia. Their energetic performances, the relentless, driving rhythms, the highly evocative vocal performances give us a glimpse into the rich musical culture from this corner of the world.
